  • Concrete unit masonry

Requires pre-design modeling and analysis of energy-related systems to inform an optimized design and encourages taking advantage of efficiencies. The building envelope is among the systems to be explored.

The thermal mass and heat capacity of concrete masonry has been shown to benefit energy design, and in most cases significantly contribute to reduction in HVAC requirements. The California Energy Code recognizes and accounts for concrete masonry as a heavy mass wall.

In most Southern California climate zones, insulation is NOT required for concrete masonry walls 8-inches and greater in width. See Optimize Energy Performance

Further efficiencies may be gained when considering concrete masonry as a multi-function system with structural, acoustic, fire-resistant, energy, and design finish properties. See Multi-Function Assemblies.
